Eric Blodöks (Bloodaxe) was the favourite son of Harald Finehair, King of Norway. During the latter's declining years there was continual warfare among his many sons and although Eric was given supreme power before his father's death in 933, the fighting continued unabated. Following a short reign characterised by great violence, Eric was expelled in favour of his brother Håkon the Good. After raiding elsewhere, Eric arrived in York in 947 and was accepted as king, but lasted only a few months. He returned in 952 and reigned for just two years before he was again driven out and killed at Stainmore.
